May 26, 2023 - Breaking News Pt. 2

A tall girl with green hair walks through the wrought-iron gates painted a flawless lilac into the Organization Sector and stops in shock.

She’d come to fill out her ROT papers to go to the Capetol and make custom vases for a big gala at the end of Orbit 7. But the sidewalks of the Organization Sector are covered with pages of a newspaper. She walks up to a page that looks like a cover and picks it up but the moment she touches the freshly printed ink, it stains her fingers with a sharp pain. She drops it, but the black ink stain twists up her wrists and settles into her veins. Her hair color dulls and the endless words around the street seem stark in comparison to her freckled skin. There is no one else in the street - the Apet slaves that work the Sector Gates are the only witnesses to this incident. They stare with a twisted intrigue; no one sees a supposedly innocent Mainlanders suffer in broad daylight like this.

The girl bends to read the words on the page. The article is an Orbit old and everyone had already heard the news. But the article was from the Capetol Column. The girl numbly wonders how the newspaper had ended up here.

The silence grows thick. The girl suddenly realizes just how alone she is. And even in a utopia, that feeling never means good things.

The ghostly embrace of her blood sliding around her neck punctuates her panic. The deep golden liquid that spills from the cut at the imperfectly blended patch of skin and hair on her neck mixes with the fresh black ink.

The slaves return to their guarding posts and her body melts into a golden illusion.
