April 12, 2023 - Money and Items

(Here is the money post I’ve had written in my planner/to-do notebook for a solid five weeks.)

The currency in WU is = (walls) but money is only used in the Capetol - it’s illegal in the Mainland. If you get caught with smuggled Capetol money you’re sent to the Grounds (a prison bunker in the middle of the Forest of Beyond) with other “criminals'' from both the Mainland and Capetol. Not a good look. But if there’s no money in the Mainland, how do people get things?

On the first day of every Orbit (20 Earth days, or 20 Suns in WU time) , everyone receives a shipment of food based on their Theme, what they enjoy, etc. Some of the food is pre-made and some of it is just the ingredients. People intuitively know how to cook whatever meals are disassembled in their shipment. On the last day of every Orbit, everyone packs up whatever food they didn’t eat and it’s re-ripened and sent back out in another shipment to (mostly) other people.

For physical items like clothes, technology, etc, they can request it from whatever “industry” makes it. For example, if Benny needs a pottery wheel, she’d have to request it. The requesting process entails:

1. Calling a special phone number - an AI-like thing will answer the phone

2. Saying your information (Name, Theme, Talent, Address), exactly what you want and why

3. The AI will acknowledge you and ask a few clarifying questions, then the call will end

4. The AI will then contact everyone with the Talent needed to complete your request and connect you with them via a special messaging service only for this purpose

5. Once your item is completed, you will receive it at your home

So if Benny wanted a pottery wheel, the AI (does anyone have a name idea for this magical AI? I can’t think of one…) would contact the electrician (I say the because everyone’s Talents are unique to them, which also solves the problem of population control), maybe a stonecrafter if she wanted the plate to be made out of stone, and an engineer. Benny could work with them to make it look exactly as she wanted. But say you just want a material - Benny could request something like clay as well. That wouldn’t require a specialist or a real person at all. The materials can come from the same magical place that the food comes from, courtesy of The Goddess and the Angels in their work to create a perfect and smoothly functioning society.

Maybe you’re wondering what happens in the Capetol. But it’s really just similar to Earth. Things either come in one day or seventeen hundred days, there are sites like Amazon where you can buy pretty much anything, and big factories and fast-consumption companies eat and the market and environment. People steal and borrow and are unsatisfied with their wares. Items fall into disrepair and it becomes a struggle to replace them. None of these things happen in the Mainland.

If there ever was a utopia, the Mainland sounds like mine. Few restrictions, no money, you can get anything you want, you know your purpose and what you’re good at, everything is perfect in your own little bubble. Wouldn’t that be cool.
